Professor Gene Spafford, an internationally recognized expert on information security and privacy, cyber crime, and computing reliability, will talk about some of the challenges and difficulties involved in the design and deployment of computerized voting methods. September 18-19

September 18 and 19, 2008 Purdue Memorial Mall 9am-6pm
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Eyes Wide Open-The Human Cost of War

Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee’s widely-acclaimed exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War, features a pair of boots honoring each U.S. military casualty, a field of shoes and a Wall of Remembrance to memorialize the Iraqis killed in the conflict, and a multimedia display exploring the history, cost and consequences of the war.

When this exhibit was unveiled by our Chicago office in January 2004, there were 504 pairs of boots symbolizing the lost lives of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. With each passing week, each stop in a new city, more pairs of boots are added to represent the newly fallen. Alongside the boots stands a wall of remembrance with the names of the more than 11,000 Iraqi civilians who have been killed since the U.S.-led invasion.

As the exhibit makes its appearances across the country, families and friends come to grieve for lost loved ones and strangers honor those who gave their lives to a cause far from home.

Although a majority of Americans now believe this war is a tragic misadventure, the human cost of the Iraq War grows every day. How many more boots will be standing at silent attention before this war ends, before Iraqis and American soldiers are out of harm's way?

This traveling exhibit is a memorial to those who have fallen and a witness to our belief that no war can justify its human cost

LAPC Meeting Minutes

Summary of LAPC February 4, 2007 Meeting:

A smaller group than usual attended this meeting that competed with the Super Bowl. We had a very productive and interesting meeting. Clint Fink, Visiting Scholar in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at Purdue prepared an outline of the McGovern/Polk Proposal for U.S. Withdrawal From Iraq. This summary of the book "Out of Iraq: A Practical Plan for Withdrawal Now" was very useful. It lays out "a plan to show how our exit might be accomplished in such a way to assuage the damage done both to Iraq and to America... [and] not leave behind an Iraq filled with people who hate America and will seek to revenge themselves for the war." (p. 91 of the book).

Without ten basic elements the books lays out, "Iraqi society will have little chance of recovering or its government of becoming effective... [and] American interests in the Middle East and indeed throughout the world will be damaged. ..Building on these is [second-tier policies] that could benefit both [countries] by helping Iraq create a safe and habitable environment." (p. 107 of book).

About two thirds of the items in this plan have been incorporated almost directly in a U.S. House of Representatives bill entitled, "Bring the Troops Home And Iraq Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2007" (HR 508) submitted by representatives Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, and Maxine Waters and co-sponsors on January 12, 2007.
Thanks to Clint for this excellent summary and his presentation to the group. Copies of the summary will be sent out soon and be available on our website at
www.lafayettepeace.org.

YOU are encouraged to write to our elected officials: Senators Bayh and Lugar and Representative Buyer; as well as to the bills three main sponsors. Find their contact information at: www.congress.org

Meet at the Margerum fountain on the West Lafayette side of the Myers pedestrian bridge at 4:30pm and march to the Tippecanoe County Courthouse in Lafayette for a 5pm rally there. Bring signs/banners or some will be provided. Spread the word!
